Dear teachers and mentors:
As you plan for the first day of classes on Friday, I want to share a timely resource with you from Gender Spectrum: a back-to-school toolkit.
One idea I want to highlight from this resource: consider asking everyone to share their gender pronouns as they’re introducing themselves to make room for all gender identities in your classes and in your cluster.
E.g.: “Hi. I’m Tilda. My pronouns are she/her/hers. I am the Director of Multicultural Education and the chair of the Human Development Department. I consider the Aegean Sea my home.”
Note: Some use the term “preferred gender pronouns.” I recently read an opinion piece that pointed out that those are the person’s pronouns, not just what the person would prefer to be called. Made sense to me.
You can find more resources from Gender Spectrum under the LGBTQ tab.
Thanks for reading.
The purpose of art is to lay bare the questions which have been hidden by the answers.
